Why You Need To Optimize All Your Images On Your Website
So you have found some great images online or taken some photos yourself and are excited to load them to your site only to find that when you view the page..it takes forever (maybe 5 seconds: forever in internet terms) for them to display. You know this makes you look unprofessional in the eyes of your audience and need the problem to be fixed ASAP.
Large images are one of the most over looked culprits for why your site might be running slow. If you upload a large image, your site software need to resize the image every time the page loads to display it properly. In this blog post I’ll cover how you can optimize images for your WordPress website.
The Benefits of Image Optimization
- Your site will load and respond quicker
- Your Google PageSpeed score will improve
- Search engine rankings will most likely increase
- Your site bounce rate will decrease and more visitors will see your content
- You will save storage space on your servers allowing them to run better
- You will save data plan charges for and your visitors on mobile devices
- You will look more professional in the eyes of your audience
2 Options For Image Opimization
There are 2 methods you could use to optimize your images, the first is for those with access to a image editor like Photoshop or Pixelmator and the second is the easier option in my opinion. Regardless of which one you pick just make sure you get the job done.
The First Option: Image Editing Software
There are many options to choose from, but I personally use Pixelmator to edit all my images because it is a one time purchase unlike Photoshop which is a on going subscription. When I have the choice I like to own software, not rent it forever.
The pros of using a image editing software are getting full control over every aspect of the image (size, color, file type). The cons are obvious in that you have to manually edit every single image that you want resized which can be a long time consuming process if you have a lot of images.
The Second Option: Image Optimization Plugin
There are a number of different plugins in the WordPress market place but in my experience ShortPixel is the best option. It’s easy to use and will save you a ton of time you would have spent resizing all your images one by one in an image editor.
The pros are it is easy to install and use within minutes and will also auto detect whenever you add new images and give you a notification if you want to optimize them. There are no real cons that I have experienced so far other than it costs money, but any good quality image editor costs money also.
Conclusion: Use an Image Optimization Plugin Instead of Resizing Every Image Yourself
As you can now see, optimizing your images for better website performance is not difficult to understand but is definitely something you want to do or hire someone to do for you. Because I do a lot of web deign and video production work I have used both options (image editing software & WordPress plugins) for optimization. In my opinion, unless you really enjoy spending a lot of time editing images I would highly recommend you go with ShortPixel to do it for you. Their pricing is very reasonable which they offer by the month or you can buy credits which is what I do.
